Backyard Roots is an evolving group of 6 to 10 people collectively working the land of other people's backyards throughout Northampton, MA. Together, these separate plots function as a mini collective farm.

Teenagers!

Our garden has really taken off. It is pretty impressive to see a garden that last year really struggled, come into its own: whether through our experience, both in gardening and working together,  the benefit of what happens to soil in its second year of gardening, or the better weather What I am most impressed by (so far) are the onions, which barely grew last year, and this year are strong and already quite large.

babies

The crazy dense, wet soil of Bradford hasn't stopped these baby lettuces and black garbanzos from pushing through.

The difference in soils throughout our "farm" is immense, with our plots spread across the city. Bradford St.'s heavy clay soil seems to be loved by salad greens and kale! Northern Ave.'s light, sandy soil is great for rye. We'll be doing some experimenting this year, planting some things in both locations and see how they do..

Here are a few more photos of the beginnings of this season at our Bradford spot.. (Note: the last 3 were taken by Aiyana, our very skilled 3-year-old photographer/farmer.)

Yard sharing

Yard sharing is a way for people who don't have backyards or not enough backyard, to borrow the backyard of their neighbor to garden in.
